Reporting to the District Safety Manager, Construction Manager, and Superintendent, the HSE Coordinator assumes responsibility for the safety and well-being of themselves and the crew. They will ensure work tasks are performed safely in accordance with Occupational Health and Safety Legislation and company policies and that work is performed with a high level of quality and timeliness.This position is for sites throughout the Lower Mainland. There is potential for nightshift work.
Responsibilities
Provide First Aid as required.
Record findings and initiate notifications as warranted.
Conduct orientations for new workers and visitors.
Assist in preparation/review of daily FLHA’s for Bird forces.
Validate equipment and processes are appropriate and validate worker understanding and competency.
Attend morning trade production meetings to understand what’s happening that day, with a focus in trades interactions and potential safety conflicts from multiple work processes.
Conduct frequent inspections of the site. Address HSE Issues in a timely fashion and complete the documents/reports.
Write reports, research HSE information, develop site specific safe work procedures and provide training, instruction or guidance to Bird forces as needed or directed.
Review upcoming activities of new trades. Obtain information, programs, or certificates to ensure trade is compliant with HSE requirements prior to starting the work, or piece of work.
Review changing site conditions/activities with Bird Project Management and evaluate for risks which may not yet be identified. Provide mitigation strategies for these risks.
Interact with Client as needed to address any Client safety concerns and/or validate to Client that actions are consistent with their expectations. Potentially conduct weekly inspections with Client – focusing on Client issues [public safety, motorist safety, environment, etc.].
Conduct weekly toolbox talks and monthly Safety Committee meetings.
Ensure that all incidents and/or accidents are reported, investigated, immediately addressed, and appropriately documented.
Provide training to Bird forces as appropriate and coordinate required or recertification training with the District HSE Manager.
Address non-compliance issues with Bird and trades. Interact with trade safety representatives as needed to resolve issues.
Record and document data required for daily safety report, including direction of trade data
Understand and utilize the right and responsibility to stop unsafe work.
Execute assigned tasks in a safe and efficient manner.
Be familiar with current COVID-19 protocols/processes and ensure the crews are following the current provincial health guidelines.
Inspect onsite safety equipment as per industry standards and applicable legislation.
Use a gas detector for Confined Space Work and monitor air quality when needed.
Drive safely and professionally, always obeying all traffic rules.
Assist labour crews as required.

What We Are Looking For
High school Diploma required
2 years’ experience as a general laborer in the construction industry an asset
CSTS’09, or CSTS 2020 or SiteReadyBC
WHMIS 2015 trained
Hold a valid OFA ticket minimum Level 2
Hold qualified CSO or NCSO ticket
Confined Space Entry andRescue is an asset
Fall Protection
Criminal record check may be required
Valid driver’s license and clean drivers abstract an asset
Vertical Rescue an asset
General construction safety knowledge

Physical Requirements:
Physical ability to lift to 50lbs, occasionally lift items weighing more than 50lbs with assistance
Stand or walk for long periods of time
Use arms and hands to reach for, handle or manipulate objects
Climb up and down ladders, scaffolds, and other objects
Safety equipment will be required, 6” high ankle steel-toed safety boots, safety glasses/goggles, hard hat, safety vest and gloves to be provided
Able to manage multiple priorities simultaneously and meet the time demands of unpredictable activities, capable of handling pressure and challenges in a dynamic business environment
Ability to work within tight deadlines and prioritization of work to achieve them
Strong analytical, critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail
